‘At some point the path becomes the obstacle. The thing that got us to this point of understanding will at point be an obstacle to another layer of understanding.’

Notes from the rubber mat at the Bridge Yoga School.

Sometimes I stretch a winning formula. I fall to comfort settings failing to read the moment. A stale predictability after countless repetitions. An unwillingness to explore something new.

Max Flashbacks

A return to a past life dancing to an Aussie rock band.

Thrashing riffs. Speakers at full blast. Shoulders rubbing against stubble. Fresh tinny ice packs.

Shooting the Pretty Littles at a beach bar in Madiha, Sri Lanka flooded back memories of a younger Max. A Triple J loving gig hopper. Spilling schooeys on my denim jacket adding a fresh layer of grip to the sticky band room floors.

The nostalgia familiarised the details guiding the edits. It’s surprising how any experience can support you years later.

The images came to life in post-production. A lot of time editing, experimenting. Going deeper into styles to elevate feeling.

Fred Again USB artwork

I noticed the artwork to Fred Again’s USB singles inspiring the work. The grainy imperfections communicate.

Darkness.

Close bodies.

Sweaty heat.

Movement.

Energy.

hold/release

There was a dualistic aspect to the shoot. A past Max helping me see something today. An old editing style stopping me from showcasing the show’s feeling.

The shoes that brought me here wore out inhibiting me from taking my next step. I threw away features I lean on.

I let go of softness to give clarity to the heavy edges and intensities.

Back sweaties need to look sticky.

I look forward to the next Aussie thrasher shoot. The frenetic little moments in the soup.
